The Greater Washington Fashion Chamber of Commerce held our first annual State of Style Advocacy Day, Awards Ceremony and Fashion Benefit on May 20, 2010. The day began with a Breakfast Orientation followed by visits by Advocacy staff to their state senators and representatives to discuss our mission as well as the importance of the newly formed Congressional Apparel Manufacturing and Fashion Business Caucus.

After our successful visits with our congressional representatives, it was time to recognize and honor the pioneers and leaders in the fashion industry. After the introduction by GWFCC Legislative Assistant, Carolou Goodridge, Angie Goff, WUSA-TV 9 officially opened the awards ceremony. Goff talked earnestly about the importance of the fashion industry in D.C. and why she is so involved with the efforts of the GWFCC. After her opening remarks, Goff introduced our President, Christine Brooks-Cropper, who said  a few words about what this day meant to her and the organization.

Fashionable Life: Tashia Senn’s ’60s Spirit

Tashia Senn’s Fall/Winter 2010 Presentation at the plush Hela Spa in Chevy Chase

Nestled above Jimmy Choo and next to Louis Vuitton, the Hela Spa is at the epicenter of every fashionista’s paradise. The swank spa in Chevy Chase provided the perfect backdrop for the Tashia Senn Fall/Winter 2010 presentation.

The collection was inspired by the mod glamour of the 1960’s. Using Lena Horn, Jackie Kennedy, and Twiggy as her muses, Senn created a refined collection embedded with modern touches. Elegant evening wear and flirty cocktail dresses were fashioned out of silks and adorned with French lace, Swarovski crystals, and sequins. The look of the show was an asymmetrical silk chiffon mini dress with a feathered skirt. The sunkissed confection certainly met Tashia’s goal of “creating designs that capture the romance of life and place women at the center of attention.”

Accenting the ensembles was exceptionally unique jewelry by Faso. The designers, Banafsheh Fatoorechie and Maryam Sardari, strive to “mix old and new elements together to create something different, while keeping up with the trends.”

Tashia Senn’s ultimate ambition is to show at New York’s Fashion Week. The 2009 FIT graduate is well on her way with her sophisticated style sensibility.

Tashia!

We went to Ted Gibson Salon for the presentation of designer Tashia Senn's eponymous clothing line for next fall. The Fashion Institute of Technology grad told us she launched her collection in her hometown to bring us more fashion. She's flanked by Greater Washington Fashion Chamber of Commerce's Fancy Francois and Christine Brooks-Cropper.

Tashia told us she was inspired by the 1960s for her collection, and can make any of the looks for all shapes and sizes.

In the past several months, a lot of work has gone into addressing the challenges of our GWFCC members and the American Fashion industry as a whole; not only on the local level, but the national level as well. Our goal was to ensure that there be an outlet for all of our voices to be heard by our lawmakers. Our hard work has paid off! The Committee on House Administration has confirmed the creation of the Congressional Apparel Manufacturing and Fashion Business Caucus. Congrats to all of us!

We have a lot of work to do so check back for updates.  Join our mailing list and become involved.

Winter Legislative Updates:

By Carolou Goodridge

March 2010 - After a slight hiatus, we’re back with legislative updates that are important to you. Meanwhile, Congress has been hard at work…we promise. The operative word here is “work,” as in Jobs, Jobs, Jobs!

More specifically, Congress has passed the Jobs for Main Street Act of 2010 or the “Jobs Bill,” which among many advances, directs $354 million, fully offset, for the Small Business Administration (SBA) to continue two temporary loan guarantee authorities through the end of fiscal year 2010 to make loans more attractive to borrowers and lenders and to free up capital. Small businesses represent a major engine for the U.S. economy, but many small business owners have had a difficult time securing needed loans in these tight economic times.
