Across the United States and the world, fashion is a flourishing and profitable industry. In New York City, a world fashion capital the fashion industry provides over 150,000 jobs for more than 15,400 businesses and has had an impact of $35.5 billion in direct and indirect spending. New York’s fashion week generate $177 million annually, not including the additional millions of dollars spent on wholesale apparel merchandise in the weeks that follow. Similarly, Los Angeles fashion markets are responsible for brining in $103 million in revenue annually for local businesses, which support 1,370 jobs and $30 million in local wages and salaries. In countless ways, Washington is an ideal location for a vibrant and thriving fashion economy. With an existing base of fashion professionals and consumers Washington already has many of the factors that have made similar global cities, like New York, a fashion destination. The GWFCC has already identified over 100 local designers and 70 retailers, and Washington is well known for its sophisticated urban population, growing international population and world class entertainment. With the passage of DC Bill 17-0173, the bill that created Commission on Fashion Arts and Events, GWFCC now serves as the lead organization to successfully organize, lobby and promote the greater Washington area as a global fashion destination. |
